Greetings fellow explorers! I'm thrilled to share the remarkable tale of my unforgettable journey to the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu from this past July. With a pre-cruise exploration of Quito and an awe-inspiring voyage aboard Celebrity Flora, followed by a breathtaking Peruvian extension, this expedition was nothing short of a dream come true.
Discovering Quito: A Prelude to Adventure
Our journey commenced in Quito, where we were welcomed by the warm embrace of Celebrity Cruise staff. Nestled at an altitude of around 9,000 feet, the city's rich cultural tapestry and historical charm were the perfect beginning. We explored an ancient monastery, meandered through the heart of the old city, and savored a delectable dinner at La Gloria, a local culinary gem.
Celebrity Flora: Where Luxury Meets Nature
Embarking on the Celebrity Flora felt like stepping into a realm of modern luxury and eco-conscious elegance. From the moment we were greeted with Champagne on our arrival by zodiac, we knew we were in for the ultimate pampered cruise. The personalized service, manned largely by local Ecuadorians, set a tone of genuine hospitality. Our suite, adorned with floor-to-ceiling windows, an infinite verandah, a bathtub and plush amenities, provided a tranquil sanctuary.
Galapagos Wonders: Wildlife and Landscapes Unveiled
Every day on the Celebrity Flora brought new possibilities for adventure. Guided by enthusiastic local naturalists, we embarked on excursions that unveiled the Galapagos' diverse landscapes and incredible wildlife. Snorkeling alongside playful sea lions and vibrant fish, navigating the waves alongside sea turtles, and witnessing the intricate courtship dance of blue-footed boobies were just a few of the mesmerizing experiences. Thank you Pachamama!
Awe-Inspiring Encounters: From Iguanas to Giant Tortoises
Hiking through the islands, we encountered nature in its most authentic forms. Mini-dinosaur-like sea iguanas, giant albatrosses gracing the skies, and adorable baby sea lions nursing with their mothers created a tapestry of life. The pinnacle of our wildlife encounters was the sighting of the majestic Giant Tortoises, ancient and awe-inspiring, embodying the passage of time.
Under the Stars: Romance on the High Seas
Celebrity Flora surprised us with a night of enchantment, where a private cabana dinner under the stars captured the essence of romance. Falling asleep beneath the open sky, with the gentle lull of the sea, was a unique and spectacular experience.
From Galapagos to the Andes: Peru's Splendors Await
Leaving the Galapagos behind, we journeyed to Peru. The vistas of the Sacred Valley were nothing short of majestic, as we acclimatized to the altitude. Our stay at Tambo del Inca was a blend of comfort and natural beauty, setting the stage for the adventure ahead. The hotel was this lodge that made the best Pisco sours.
Machu Picchu: A Moment Frozen in Time
The train and bus ride to Machu Picchu was an adventure in itself, navigating switchbacks and cliffside views. Reaching the site, we were greeted by the iconic panorama of Machu Picchu nestled among the Andean peaks. As llamas grazed amid ancient ruins, we delved into the rich history of the Incas, culminating in an unforgettable luxury train ride on the Hiram Bingham.
A Tapestry of Two Adventures
Our journey ended in Cuzco, where we deepened our understanding of the Incas and the diverse cultures of Peru. A visit to a llama and alpaca sanctuary provided us with tangible memories of this vibrant nation. This expedition was more than a trip; it was a transformational experience. The Galapagos and Machu Picchu unveiled their mysteries, while Celebrity Flora's elegance and the warmth of the Andean people touched our hearts. It's a journey that has forever woven itself into the fabric of our lives.
With wanderlust and gratitude,
Mike
